On the Summit of SanBernardino Peak, 10,649'
San Bernardino Peak is in the same range as San Gorgonio and the trails and difficulty are about the same. I started out for the summit around 6:00 am, set upon doing the entire hike in a day. If I was not on the summit by 12:00 I was going to turn around, regardless of where I was, and start the hike back down, ensuring that I would have enough daylight left to get off the mountain safely. I made great time up to around 8000', then I began encountering snow, much more than I had expected. The 6" to 12" of new snow slowed me down slightly but losing the trail slowed my down even more. After 5.5 hours of hiking I slowly came over the final rise and hit the summit with half an hour to spare.
