I was camped on the Kiowa National Grasslands, NM, when a truck drove up to my isolated site. The old man in the truck asked me what I was doing out there and I gave him a short version of my travels. It turns out that he is a rancher in the area and that he leases the land that I was camped on and uses the land for grazing his cattle. He asked me if I would like to see the land and his herd and of course I said yes. I opened and closed gates as he drove out to the edge of the Canadian River Canyon, an incredibly impressive site probably known by few people besides the locals. I saw his herd of cattle and learned about ranching and branding and related topics. The tour lasted about an hour and was fantastic.
