What is a Pastie?

So I am driving around in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and every third shop has a sign out front that reads, "Pasties."  So after driving past thousands of these signs I finally stop to buy a pastie.  I walked into the store and proceed to complely mispronounce Pastie (it is not pronounced like the stripper garment) and learned what it it.  A pastie is a big pastry pocket filled with meat, potatoes, and carrots.  It is a fairly basic food, kind of bland, but good.  And up in the Upper Pen. they are the favorite food, or so it seems.
